Delicate Arch at Sunset, Arches National Park, Utah, 2001. Kiev 60, 120mm Vega lens, polarizer. The Colorado Plateau has always been a place of magic for me. Many of my most satisfying adventures have played out there, and the land reflects that hand of the Maker such that we mere humans can only gape in wondrous awe. The plateau is extends from west of the Rocky Mountains to the Hurricane Cliffs nearly at the western border of Utah, and includes the Colorado River Upswell (through which the Grand Canyon cuts), the Navaho Reservation, and all of so-call Canyon Country. The sights from this area are other-worldly, evoking awe and an overwhelming sense of grandeur. For a photographer, that awe is a distraction. I have literally thousands of images from perhaps a dozen different trips to the Colorado Plateau. Most of them are attempts to record what I saw, and while they do that they fail in recording what I felt. Occasionally, though, the images captured the drama and power of the scene, and it is those that I will share. Eventually, this page will be the jumping off page for images from all of these trips, organized by place. History: The first batch of photos, from Arches and one from Bryce, uploaded July 11, 2001. Second batch includes Arches, Natural Bridges, and Glen Canyon, uploaded July 16, 2001. Third batch includes Arches, Natural Bridges, Glen Canyon, and Capitol Reef, with a replacement for the image in Bryce, uploaded July 26, 2001. Fourth batch includes Capitol Reef and a new section called Utah Miscellany, uploaded August 24. Fifth batch uploaded December 14, 2001, incuding images from Bryce Canyon, and a couple of additional 35mm images from the spectacular sunset at Capitol Reef. More batches to come, including many more images from Bryce Canyon. |
