George Vanderbilt, the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, spent his share of the family's fortune building the biggest house in America. He believed in a noblesse oblige-inspired holistic approach to estate management, where the estate would sustain itself and the surrounding community. His descendents still own it, and it still sustains them and the surrounding community, but now as a showplace for tourists. But what a show!

Far less grand, but built before rather than after the Civil War, the Oatlands Plantation represents a typical, antebellum estate for the landed gentry who actually had to live off the land (with help, of course). Oatlands is in Northern Virginia. Nobody hugely famous ever lived there, but it is still maintained as a museum of Virginia rural life when this part of Virginia was two days of riding away from Washington.

I happened to glance out the window to see the effects of a winter sunset on the bare branches of trees along Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, Maryland.
