It has been many years as of this writing since I published articles on bicycle engineering in Triathlete, but I still get emails from those needing advice on bicycle technical issues. I refer them to the links below. Sheldon Brown's Web Page - The single most comprehensive and authoritative site in all of cycledom. The glossary is particularly useful, telling, in the Samuel Johnson tradition, as much about the author as about the thing being defined. Sheldon left us on February 3, 2008, but the lives he touched cannot be untouched and he won't be forgotten. RIP, Sheldon Brown. Damon Rinards's Web Page - No electron microscope here, but a lot of detailed and careful testing of all sorts of things, including frame and fork stiffness, component weights, and step-by-step instructions for building your own carbon bike. Follow his remaining links, and also the link to Sheldon Brown's web page for an archive of his articles. Analytic Cycling - Every calculation you ever wanted to impress your physics prof with, from rotational inertia of wheels to the effects of aerodynamic drag. Tom Compton wades through the physics and mathematics of cycling, and provides this powerful on-line calculator. |
